A. Participants from outside Japan will be nominated by the cooperating institutions. To inquire about the application and review procedures, please contact

B. Overseas PhD students at Japanese universities are to submit their applications to JSPS via the administrative office of their university or center (under the Global COE Program or WPI Program). For detailed procedures, please visit “

The applicants must meet all of the following eligibility requirements.
1) Be a PhD student with excellent academic performance (or young researchers 35 years old or younger as of March 7, 2011 if there is a lack of eligible PhD students)
2) Had not been selected to participate in the previous HOPE Meetings
3) Be able to provide a high-quality poster presentation related to the subjected field in English
4) Have an outstanding record of achievements in the study of their own research field
5) Be fluent in English
6) Have a strong interest not only in their own discipline but also in a wide range of fields
7) Possess respect for diverse cultures, values, and ethnicities
8) Be able to participate in the entire Meeting programs
The participants will comprise 30 Japanese PhD students and 70 selected PhD students from the countries/areas of the Asian region.
JSPS will cover the following costs for all participants based on its regulations.
1) Local travel (in Japan) expenses
*International airfares will be covered by the cooperating institutions

- Excursion costs

Each cooperating institution receives and screens applications.
- Beginning of October, 2010
Cooperating institutions refer candidates to JSPS.
- November, 2010
JSPS notifies the candidates and their cooperating institutions of their selection results.
