HOPE Meeting 2008 Review

Participants' Impressions

First HOPE Meeting: Participants' Impressions
Mr.Benjamin Scott FlavelMr.Benjamin Scott Flavel / Flinders University(Australia)

In the early stages of any career it is often very helpful to have such excellent mentorship and guidance as it can sometimes be confusing as to what the correct decisions for your career would be. I will now be thinking more seriously of perhaps approaching one of the groups which I have been exposed to during the meeting

Mr. Nan Pan

Mr. Nan Pan / University of Science and Technology of China (China)

Although lots of us, more or less, had read some of their publications, heard a few of their presentations before, we have never been given such many opportunities to communicate and chat with these Masters as freely and closely as this meeting more developed the world, more responsibilities should be taken by scholars and researchers. These famous masters have given us excellent samples.

Ms. Debaleena NandiMs. Debaleena Nandi / Indian Institute of Science (India)

This visit to Japan has been an eye opener. In future if I am in a position to make an impact on how Indian science should evolve, I will try to foster better industry- research interface in my country.

Mr.Agus Sukarto Wismogroho

Mr. Agus Sukarto Wismogroho / Indonesian Institute of Science (Indonesia)

There are many remarkable things that I acquired after attending HOPE meeting. Firstly, new experiencing informations about technologies that able to revolutionize society nowadays and future. These new experiences had opened my eyes that world is changing so fast beyond my thought, and this is could be happened with contribution of many scientific breakthroughs around the world. I learned that we have to start from ourselves to change into the better condition. Any assistance from other party will have less meaning without any willingness to be self-reliance. Thus, spirit for working professionally and determination will become main factor in improving research in developing countries.

Hirotsugu Nagai

Hirotsugu Nagai / Nagoya University

After hearing Dr. Esaki’s lecture, I thought that it’s no reason to be cowardice and I’m sure that I should do what I want to do when young. The connections among the professors, mentors, and students are precious and priceless. We talked many things during the meeting each other (e.g. culture, religion, lifestyle, opinion etc.). Meeting is over, but friendship and connection will last forever.

Naoka NagamuraNaoka Nagamura / Tokyo University

Each lecturer has a strong, attractive personality and their lectures reflect their identities. I can learn not only the current study of nano-field, but also “the spirit for science researchers”. it is variable to see my situation from the viewpoint of nano-field through the HOPE meeting. First, I am further motivated to keep on studying by feeling passion and pride for their own study of Nobel laureates and young researchers. Second, I can broaden not only my present viewpoint but also outlook of my future. Lastly, I can see the direction for my study by learning long-time big visions in addition to immediate objectives. This experience will be turned to advantage directly or indirectly.

Naoyuki KawamotoNaoyuki Kawamoto / Tohoku University

Through an experience of meeting to various people at the HOPE meeting, I found that I was happy to be able to research and there was many chances to do useful work for human. The first HOPE meeting was a good opportunity for me to recognize a society of research and a need of communication ability. This experience was a good time for me to warn the need of English.

Shinya IkedaShinya Ikeda / Kyushu University

It is good experience for me to discuss a matter and lock horns with foreign peoples. I exchanged views with group members and learned a variety of idea, viewpoint, and opinion.

Hiromi Minemawari

Hiromi Minemawari / Hokkaido University

Quite a wide range of knowledge and interests, interdisciplinary sense and infinite curiosity these abilities are what young researchers should acquire, and which I strongly recognized by seeing real science mind with my own eyes. Such experiences are quite different from the ones I have had so far. For creative collaborations, training in languages to transcend borders and making interpersonal relationship through face-to-face communication is important. I recognized the necessity of making close network of young researchers in the Asia-Pacific region and why “science is people” through our group presentation.

Mr. Kwangsu Kim

Mr. Kwangsu Kim / Sungkyunkwan University (Korea)

The best thing in the HOPE Meeting 2008, I think, it is group presentation. For presentation, we had to talk and discuss a lot and could learn from each other such as different idea, discuss skill and some different point of view with same topic. … After coming back to their country, our group exchanged messenger ID and we still talk sometimes. Also, one member make internet site to communicate more.

Mr. Boon Tong Goh

Mr. Boon Tong Goh / University of Malaya (Maraysia)

The Noble Laureate lectures were interesting and inspired ideas of research and also important of science on our human life. Also, those lectures highlight the role of nanoscience and nanotechnology on our new era of technology and science. Most of the young participants from different country and university gain experience and knowledge from this meeting. Besides from this young researchers also gain inspiration and motivation from this meeting.

Mr. Conrad Douglas LendrumMr. Conrad Douglas Lendrum / Victoria University of Wellington/Industrial Research Ltd. (Australia)

The meeting was very well run and the general environment was sufficiently relaxed to minimise nervousness and apprehension.
knowing people in other countries can open doors to opportunities that might have not been there otherwise.? But I think the greatest asset is that these contacts may become a catalyst for something greater in the future.

Mr.Lawrence Vermudez Madriaga

Mr.Lawrence Vermudez Madriaga / University of the Philippines-Diliman (Philippins)

That is all what scientific conferences are like; at least that’s what I expected. What I experienced instead was a series of advanced courses on my chosen field of research, nanotechnology. My experience in the HOPE Meeting 2008 helped define what I would do for the next few years of my career as a researcher and educator.

Ms.Peili TeoMs.Peili Teo / National University of Singapore(Singapore)

Besides learning the science from the scientists themselves during the HOPE meeting, students can also learn presentation skills from good speakers. The small group discussion sessions with selected nobel laureates is a good chance for students to pose questions to these top-notched scientists in a more informal setting. General questions outside an individual’s research discipline could be posted to the scientists and these facilitate learning of skills that one simply cannot pick up from the textbook or from simply carrying out mundane experiments.

Ms.Chularat Iamsamai

Ms.Chularat Iamsamai / Chulalongkorn University(Thailand)

All of Nobel laureates informally talked with students not only about their work but also about their life style. I was confident that after HOPE meeting, not only me but also other participants would receive knowledge in different fields, opened vision and used this opportunity to be inspired and motivated to improve and develop our research in the future.

Mr.Tzu-Hsin ChanMr.Tzu-Hsin Chan / National Taiwan University and Academia Sinica (Taiwan)

After this HOPE meeting, I realized they are just like us, the only different is they have the great “science mind” and really hard working.

Mr.Tung Thanh NguyenMr.Tung Thanh Nguyen / Vietnamese Academy of Science and Technology (VAST) (Vietnam)

After attending the conference, I achieve lessons on matter approaching method to apply in scientific study. Also, attending the conference, I get more driving force for working and studying.
