Note: The following information is mainly for the applicants in Japan. For detailed information on the selection/nomination process in other counties/areas, please contact the secretariat of the cooperating institutions.
How Do I Apply?
Q: Though I am a PhD student at a university in Japan, I will be abroad during the application submission period. How can I submit an application?

A: Please submit your application through the secretariat of your university in Japan.

Q: When will the program for the HOPE Meeting be available?

A: It will be uploaded onto this webpage as soon as it is decided.

Q: I have another appointment that overlaps the meeting schedule. May I participate in only part of the meeting?

A: Applicants are expected to participate in the entire meeting program. Even accepted, and if it turns out that an applicant cannot participate in the entire program, JSPS may cancel his/her invitation.
Are there any conditions for applications?
Q: I am from a country (area) other than in the Asian region. May I apply to attend this meeting?

A: Yes. If selected in Japan, any PhD student at a Japanese university may apply regardless of nationality as the aim of the meeting is to build networks among PhD students studying and doing research within the Asian region. If selected in another Asian country, please contact the secretariat of cooperating institution in that county.

Q: The subjected field is different from my major but I am very interested in the meeting. May I apply?

A: You are eligible if you are able to present a poster in the subjected field and actively engage in the discussions with the lecturers and other participants.

Q: I am able to pay the cost of my own participation in the meeting. May I join in addition to the allotted number of participants?

A: No. One needs to receive official acceptance to participate in the meeting. Due to the facility limitations, the meeting will not be open to the public.
What financial support is available for participants?
Q: I am receiving a scholarship/fellowship (e.g. JSPS Research Fellowship for Young Scientists (DC)). May I receive financial support for my participation in the meeting?

A: JSPS will provide you with financial support for your participation if your scholarship/fellowship does not cover such support.
How/When will notification of acceptance be given?
Q: How can I know whether or not I’ve been selected?

A: After the selection decisions are made, JSPS will send out the letters of acceptance or rejection of participation to the applicants and their affiliated institutions/centers.
Other
Q: I would like to extend my stay in Tokyo for another appointment (e.g. meeting with my research partner in Japan). Would that be possible?

A: Yes, but please note that JSPS will cover only expenses related to the meeting. Any additional cost (e.g. lodging beyond the meeting period and transportation) must be covered by yourself.

Q: Can I bring my spouse and/or child(ren)?

A: No. The aim of the meeting is to build networks among the participants. Only those individuals who have been officially accepted may participate in the meeting.
