Third HOPE Meeting Overview

HOPE Meeting 2009

To advance science and technology in Asia, it will be necessary to foster talented young researchers with wide perspectives that transcend individual disciplines and with lofty values derived from the region’s inherent cultures.

To foster such young researchers, “HOPE Meetings” started to be organized by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science in 2007. The title “HOPE” signifies the promise held for young scientists and the optimism for a bright science and technology future in Asia. Under the concept of “Art in Science,” it is envisioned the young scientists will embodying the beauty of the science within themselves.

HOPE Meetings give opportunities to excellent graduate students selected from countries and areas in the region to engage in interdisciplinary discussions with Nobel laureates and other distinguished scientists pioneering the frontiers of knowledge. It is hoped that the experience the students gain at the meeting will inspire and motivate them to become excellent scientists able to shoulder the future of science and technology in the region.

The organizing committee for the third HOPE meeting, which will be held in March of 2011, is chaired by Dr. Makoto Kobayashi, who won the 2008 Nobel prize in physics. While focusing on the leading edge of physics, the meeting will seek to foster broader views and vistas across an interlinked spectrum of scientific frontiers.
